Our vacation to Greece was such a long and amazing trip that I had to break the blog posts into 2 parts. In this part 2, I’ll be sharing where we stayed, our trip to the Acropolis, and what we ate.
Flight to Athens
We booked a round trip direct flight with Emirates from Newark Airport to Athens. Our end destination is Mykonos but there’s no direct flights to Mykonos from the US.
Since the flight from Newark was 9 hours we booked a red eye flight since there’s a 7 hour time difference from New York. We took off at midnight and landed in Athens at 4pm.
Where We Stayed
We stayed one night in the city view room at Wyndham Grand Athens on our arrival and departure from Athens. It’s better to arrive in Athens one day prior to your flight to Mykonos. Especially since Mykonos is very windy and there’s a chance your fight can be cancelled.
Our room 858 had a direct view of the Acropolis and the view was amazing at night. Just seeing a historic landmark lit up on a cliff above the town is breath taking!
We spent most of our time on the 9th floor rooftop bar. Where we enjoyed light music and endless views of Athens.
Our room came with complimentary breakfast and the options were better than any complimentary breakfast in the States.
After enjoying breakfast and checking out of our hotel we were on our way to Mykonos!
I shared all about my trip to Mykonos in a previous posts.
Where We Ate
Mironi Greek Restaurant
Located right across the street from our hotel we found a clean and authentic Greek restaurant with amazingly low prices. Apps ranged between $4-$12. Entrees ranged between $8-$12. For apps we ordered the zucchini balls served with greek yogurt dip. For entrees, my husband had the tastiest chicken fry which was chicken breast chunks served over fries with bell peppers. I ordered the salmon with veggies. The salmon was so fresh and all it needed was a squeeze of fresh lemon. We ordered a pitcher of Rose that
We enjoyed this place so much we went back the next day and ordered one app and we shared an entree with a greek salad. The portion size was perfect for two hungry people.
Athens Town
There's so much Greek mythology all throughout Athens. Did you know Athens natural resource is honey and olives and that the Acropolis was built to be closer to the Gods!
There’s so much history to learn about the town. We got lucky since all of our drivers were very knowledgeable about the Athens history each person gave us a quick tour of the town. We even saw the changing of the guards!
Driving through the streets we noticed lots of graffiti it felt like NYC in the 80’s.
Acropolis
The final day we squeezed in a visit to the Acropolis. A 10 minute ride by taxi cost us only 5 euros. We bought two tickets for 40 euros at the ticket booth and walked through at our own pace. The climb to the top has very slippery rocks and the most amazing pieces of marble. During the site tour you will see a Olive tree that was gifted to Athena and stunning architecture.
We didn’t spend much time in Athens but felt our time was spent wisely and long enough to learn and see all the history.
